RESUMEN

In this study, we present a fractional factorial design approach for exploring the effects and interactions of key synthesis and electrochemical transfer parameters on the roughness and wettability of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) coatings, due to their essential role in biofilm formation. The studied parameters for the synthesis process include precursor mass, growth time, and substrate conditioning, whereas for the transfer process, applied voltage and aqueous medium concentration were studied. Through this polynomial model, we confirmed the strong influence of precursor mass and medium concentration parameters on h-BN surface roughness and its resulting antibiofilm properties.

Somatic single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) occur every time a cell divides, appearing even in healthy tissues at low frequencies. These mutations may accumulate as neutral variants during aging, or eventually, promote the development of neoplasia. Here, we present the SP-ddPCR, a droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) based approach that utilizes customized SuperSelective primers aiming at quantifying the proportion of rare SNVs. For that purpose, we selected five potentially pathogenic variants identified by whole-exome sequencing (WES) occurring at low variant allele frequency (VAF) in at-risk colon healthy mucosa of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer or advanced adenoma. Additionally, two APC SNVs detected in two cancer lesions were added to the study for WES-VAF validation. SuperSelective primers were designed to quantify SNVs at low VAFs both in silico and in clinical samples. In addition to the two APC SNVs in colonic lesions, SP-ddPCR confirmed the presence of three out of five selected SNVs in the normal colonic mucosa with allelic frequencies ≤ 5%. Moreover, SP-ddPCR showed the presence of two potentially pathogenic variants in the distal normal mucosa of patients with colorectal carcinoma. In summary, SP-ddPCR offers a rapid and feasible methodology to validate next-generation sequencing data and accurately quantify rare SNVs, thus providing a potential tool for diagnosis and stratification of at-risk patients based on their mutational profiling.

Aims: Many historical and recent reports showed that post-infarction ventricular septal rupture (VSR) represents a life-threatening condition and the strategy to optimally manage it remains undefined. Therefore, disparate treatment policies among different centres with variable results are often described. We analysed data from European centres to capture the current clinical practice in VSR management. Methods and results: Thirty-nine centres belonging to eight European countries participated in a survey, filling a digital form of 38 questions from April to October 2022, to collect information about all the aspects of VSR treatment. Most centres encounter 1-5 VSR cases/year. Surgery remains the treatment of choice over percutaneous closure (71.8% vs. 28.2%). A delayed repair represents the preferred approach (87.2%). Haemodynamic conditions influence the management in almost all centres, although some try to achieve patients stabilization and delayed surgery even in cardiogenic shock. Although 33.3% of centres do not perform coronarography in unstable patients, revascularization approaches are widely variable. Most centres adopt mechanical circulatory support (MCS), mostly extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, especially pre-operatively to stabilize patients and achieve delayed repair. Post-operatively, such MCS are more often adopted in patients with ventricular dysfunction. Conclusion: In real-life, delayed surgery, regardless of the haemodynamic conditions, is the preferred strategy for VSR management in Europe. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is becoming the most frequently adopted MCS as bridge-to-operation. This survey provides a useful background to develop dedicated, prospective studies to strengthen the current evidence on VSR treatment and to help improving its currently unsatisfactory outcomes.

Bleached kraft pulps from eucalyptus and pine were subjected to cold caustic extraction (CCE) with NaOH (5, 10, 17.5, and 35%) for hemicelluloses removal and to increase cellulose accessibility. The effect of these changes was evaluated in enzymatic saccharification with the multicomponent Cellic CTec3 enzyme cocktail, and in viscosity reduction of pulps with the monocomponent Trichoderma reesei endoglucanase (EG). After CCE with 10% NaOH (CCE10) and 17.5% NaOH (CCE17.5), hemicellulose content lower than 1% was achieved in eucalyptus and pine pulps, respectively. At these concentrations, cellulose I started to be converted into cellulose II. NaOH concentrations higher than 17.5% decreased the intrinsic viscosity (from 730 to 420 mL/g in eucalyptus and from 510 to 410 mL/g in pine). Cellulose crystallinity was reduced from 60% to 44% in eucalyptus and from 71% to 44% in pine, as the NaOH concentration increased. Enzymatic multicomponent saccharification showed higher glucose yields in all CCE-treated eucalyptus samples (up to 93%) while only CCE17.5 and CCE35 pine pulps achieved 90% after 40 h of incubation. Untreated bleached pulps of both species presented saccharification yields lower than 70%. When monocomponent EG was used to treat the same pulps, depending on enzyme charge and incubation time, a wide range of intrinsic viscosity reduction was obtained (up to 74%). Results showed that eucalyptus pulps are more accessible and easier to hydrolyze by enzymes than pine pulps and that the conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II hydrate only has the effect of increasing saccharification of CCE pine samples. Viscosity reduction of CCE pulps and EG treated pulps were obtained in a wide range indicating that pulps presented characteristics suitable for cellulose derivatives production.

Codium bernabei is a green alga that grows on Chilean coasts. The composition of its structural polysaccharides is still unknown. Hence, the aim of this work is to isolate and characterize the hot water extracted polysaccharide fractions. For this purpose, the water extracts were further precipitated in alcohol (TPs) and acid media (APs), respectively. Both fractions were characterized using different physicochemical techniques such as GC-MS, GPC, FTIR, TGA, and SEM. It is confirmed that the extracted fractions are mainly made of sulfated galactan unit, with a degree of sulfation of 19.3% (TPs) and 17.4% (ATs) and a protein content of 3.5% in APs and 15.6% in TPs. Other neutral sugars such as xylose, glucose, galactose, fucose, mannose, and arabinose were found in a molar ratio (0.05:0.6:1.0:0.02:0.14:0.11) for TPs and (0.05:0.31:1.0:0.03:0.1:0.13) for ATs. The molecular weight of the polysaccharide samples was lower than 20 kDa. Both polysaccharides were thermally stable (Tonset > 190 °C) and showed antioxidant activity according to the ABTS•+ and DPPH tests, where TPs fractions had higher scavenging activity (35%) compared to the APs fractions. The PT and APTTS assays were used to measure the anticoagulant activity of the polysaccharide fractions. In general, the PT activity of the TPs and APs was not different from normal plasma values. The exception was the TPs treatment at 1000 µg mL−1 concentration. The APTTS test revealed that clotting time for both polysaccharides was prolonged regarding normal values at 1000 µg mL−1. Finally, the antitumor test in colorectal carcinoma (HTC-116) cell line, breast cancer (MCF-7) and human leukemia (HL-60) cell lines showed the cytotoxic effect of TPs and APs. Those results suggest the potential biotechnological application of sulfate galactan polysaccharides isolated from a Chilean marine resource.

Introduction: measles is an immunopreventable viral disease, acute exanthematous and extremely transmissible. Infection occurs directly, from person to person, through respiratory secretions. The measles vaccine is low-cost and effective, but measles still affects around 40 million people worldwide and is responsible for at least 800,000 deaths, mainly in developing countries.Objective: to analyze vaccination coverage and measles incidence in Northern Brazil.Methods: this is an ecological study. Secondary data were used regarding vaccination coverage of the viral double, viral triple and viral tetra and incidence of measles in residents in the States of the Northern Region, Brazil, from 2010 to 2018.Results: confirmed measles cases in 2010 to 2018 in the Northern region of Brazil it registered 10,249, were reported in Amazonas (95.65%), Roraima (3.53%), Pará (0.80%) and Rondônia (0.02%). Outbreaks of measles cases in the Northern Region were reported in 2018, the highest incidence rate was in Amazonas with 237.7. Vaccination coverage in the North Region varied between the lowest rate in 2013 with 56.88% and the highest vaccination coverage achieved in 2010, with 104.02%.Conclusion: it was possible to observe a reduction in vaccination coverage during the study period, not reaching the percentage recommended by the Ministry of Health and increasing the incidence of measles in the Northern Region of Brazil and these indicators are important to determine the strategies to be carried out by the National Program for Immunization and Epidemiological Surveillance.


Introdução: o sarampo é uma doença viral imunoprevenível, exantematosa aguda e extremamente transmissível. A infecção ocorre de forma direta, de pessoa a pessoa, por meio das secreções respiratórias. A vacina contra o sarampo é de baixo custo e efetiva, porém o sarampo ainda acomete cerca de 40 milhões de pessoas no mundo e é responsável por pelo menos 800 mil mortes, principalmente em países em desenvolvimento.Objetivo: analisar a cobertura vacinal e incidência de sarampo na Região Norte do Brasil.Método: trata-se de um estudo ecológico. Utilizou-se dados secundários referente a cobertura vacinal da dupla viral, tríplice viral e tetra viral e incidência de sarampo em residentes nos Estados da Região Norte, Brasil, no período de 2010 a 2018.Resultados: os casos confirmados de sarampo em 2010 a 2018 na região Norte do Brasil registrou 10.249, foram notificados no Amazonas (95,65%), Roraima (3,53%), Pará (0,80%) e Rondônia (0,02%). Os surtos de casos de sarampo na Região Norte foram notificados no ano de 2018, a maior taxa de incidência foi no Amazonas com 237,7. A cobertura vacinal da Região Norte variou entre o menor índice em 2013 com 56,88% e a maior cobertura vacinal alcançada em 2010, com 104,02%.Conclusão: foi possível observar uma redução da cobertura vacinal no período de estudo, não atingindo o percentual preconizado pelo Ministério da Saúde e aumentando a incidência de sarampo na Região Norte do Brasil e estes indicadores são importantes para determinar as estratégias a serem realizadas pelo Programa de Imunização e Vigilância Epidemiológica.

AIMS: The mechanisms of coronary thrombosis can influence prognosis after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and allow for different treatment groups to be identified; an association between neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and unfavorable clinical outcomes has been suggested. Our aim was to determine the role played by NETs in coronary thrombosis and their influence on prognosis. The role of other histological features in prognosis and the association between NETs and bacteria in the coronary thrombi were also explored. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 406 patients with STEMI in which coronary thrombi were consecutively obtained by aspiration during angioplasty between 2012 and 2018. Analysis of NETs in paraffin-embedded thrombi was based on the colocalization of specific NET components by means of confocal microscopy. Immunohistochemistry stains were used to identify plaque fragments. Fluorescence in situ hybridization was used to detect bacteria.NETs were detected in 51% of the thrombi (NET density, median [interquartile range]: 25% [17-38%]). The median follow-up was 47 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 43-51); 105 (26%) patients experienced major adverse cardiac events (MACE). A significant association was found between the presence of NETs in coronary aspirates and the occurrence of MACE in the first 30 days after infarction (hazard ratio 2.82; 95% CI 1.26-6.35, p = 0.012), mainly due to cardiac deaths and stent thrombosis. CONCLUSION: The presence of NETs in coronary thrombi was associated with a worse prognosis soon after STEMI. In some patients, NETs could be a treatment target and a feasible way to prevent reinfarction.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) are pancreatic cystic lesions that can develop into pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Although there is an increasing incidence of IPMN diagnosis, the mechanisms of formation and progression into invasive cancer remain unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs, repressors of mRNA translation, and promising diagnostic biomarkers for IPMN and PDAC. Functional information on the role of early-altered miRNAs in this setting would offer novel strategies for tracking the IPMN-to-PDAC progression. In order to detect mRNAs that are likely to be under miRNA regulation in IPMNs, whole transcriptome and miRNome data from normal pancreatic tissue (n = 3) and IPMN lesions (n = 4) were combined and filtered according to negative correlation and miRNA-target prediction databases by using miRComb R package. Further comparison analysis with PDAC data allowed us to obtain a subset of miRNA-mRNA pairs shared in IPMN and PDAC. Functional enrichment analysis unravelled processes that are mainly related with cell structure, actin cytoskeleton, and metabolism. MiR-181a appeared as a master regulator of these processes. The expression of selected miRNA-mRNA pairs was validated by qRT-PCR in an independent cohort of patients (n = 40), and then analysed in different pancreatic cell lines. Finally, we generated a cellular model of HPDE cells stably overexpressing miR-181a, which showed a significant alteration of actin cytoskeleton structures accompanied by a significant downregulation of EPB41L4B and SEL1L expression. In situ hybridization of miR-181a and immunohistochemistry of EPB41L4B and SEL1L in pancreatic tissues (n = 4 Healthy; n = 3 IPMN; n = 4 PDAC) were also carried out. In this study, we offer insights on the potential implication of miRNA alteration in the regulation of structural and metabolic changes that pancreatic cells experience during IPMN establishment and that are maintained in PDAC.

The objective of this study was to investigate structural changes and lignin redistribution in Eucalyptus globulus pre-treated by steam explosion under different degrees of severity (S0), in order to evaluate their effect on cellulose accessibility by enzymatic hydrolysis. Approximately 87.7% to 98.5% of original glucans were retained in the pre-treated material. Glucose yields after the enzymatic hydrolysis of pre-treated material improved from 19.4% to 85.1% when S0 was increased from 8.53 to 10.42. One of the main reasons for the increase in glucose yield was the redistribution of lignin as micro-particles were deposited on the surface and interior of the fibre cell wall. This information was confirmed by laser scanning confocal fluorescence and FT-IR imaging; these microscopic techniques show changes in the physical and chemical characteristics of pre-treated fibres. In addition, the results allowed the construction of an explanatory model for microscale understanding of the enzymatic accessibility mechanism in the pre-treated lignocellulose.

Spatial disorder has been shown to drive two-dimensional (2D) superconductors to an insulating phase through a superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). Numerical calculations predict that with increasing disorder, emergent electronic granularity is expected in these materials-a phenomenon where superconducting (SC) domains on the scale of the material's coherence length are embedded in an insulating matrix and coherently coupled by Josephson tunneling. Here, we present spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements of the three-dimensional (3D) superconductor BaPb1-x Bi x O3 (BPBO), which surprisingly demonstrate three key signatures of emergent electronic granularity, having only been previously conjectured and observed in 2D thin-film systems. These signatures include the observation of emergent SC domains on the scale of the coherence length, finite energy gap over all space, and strong enhancement of spatial anticorrelation between pairing amplitude and gap magnitude as the SIT is approached. These observations are suggestive of 2D SC behavior embedded within a conventional 3D s-wave host, an intriguing but still unexplained interdimensional phenomenon, which has been hinted at by previous experiments in which critical scaling exponents in the vicinity of a putative 3D quantum phase transition are consistent only with dimensionality d = 2.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, multisystemic autoimmune disease of variable presentation. Massive ascites in the context of SLE is infrequent. Even so, it has been reported that ascites may be the first manifestation of SLE. It is difficult to diagnose due to the multiple possible aetiological causes of ascites. There is a rare entity called Pseudo-Pseudo Meigs Syndrome (PPMS) in patients with SLE who have ascites, pleural effusion, and CA-125 elevation unrelated to malignancy. We present two cases of massive ascites, pleural effusion and elevation of CA-125 with a history of SLE diagnosis. One of these cases was diagnosed with PPMS and another associated with neoplasm of ovarian origin.

Three yeast strains were isolated from decaying wood of Chilean Valdivian forest and identified as Meyerozyma guilliermondii, Scheffersomyces coipomensis, and Sugiyamaella paludigena. These strains were able to efficiently grow on the major monomers contained in Pinus spp. and Eucalyptus spp. wood that includes glucose (Glc), xylose (Xyl), and mannose (Man), showing at 28 °C higher uptake rates for Man, and in some cases for Glc, than for Xyl, used as single carbon sources. Nevertheless, in cultures performed on sugar mixtures, the strains displayed a notable preference for Glc. Additionally, in sugar mixtures, the absence of regulatory mechanisms in sugar assimilation (e.g., catabolic repression) was observed and documented when the activities of several enzymes involved in sugar assimilation (i.e., phosphoglucose isomerase, phosphomannose isomerase, and xylulokinase) were determined. The activity of the key enzymes involved in the onset of lipid accumulation (i.e., NAD+-ICDH) and in fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis (i.e., ATP:CL) indicated a significant accumulation of storage lipids (i.e., up to 24%, w/w) containing oleic and palmitic acids as the major components. The present paper is the first report on the potential of M. guilliermondii, S. coipomensis, and S. paludigena as oleaginous yeasts. We conclude that the new isolates, being able to simultaneously assimilate the major lignocellulosic sugars and efficiently convert them into oily biomass, present a biotechnological potential which deserve further investigation.

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are characterized by a low glucose catabolic efficiency, resulting in undesirable lactate production. Here, it is hypothesized that such low efficiency is determined by the transport of pyruvate into the mitochondria. The mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC), responsible for introducing pyruvate into the mitochondria, is formed by two subunits, MPC1 and MPC2. Stable CHO cell lines, overexpressing the genes of both subunits, were constructed to facilitate the entry of pyruvate into the mitochondria and its incorporation into oxidative pathways. Significant overexpression of both genes, compared to the basal level of the control cells, was verified, and subcellular localization of both subunits in the mitochondria was confirmed. Kinetic evaluation of the best MPC overexpressing CHO cells showed a reduction of up to 50% in the overall yield of lactate production with respect to the control. An increase in specific growth rate and maximum viable cell concentration, as well as an increase of up to 40% on the maximum concentration of two recombinant model proteins transiently expressed (alkaline phosphatase or a monoclonal antibody), was also observed. Hybrid cybernetic modeling, that considered 89 reactions, 25 extracellular metabolites, and a network of 62 intracellular metabolites, explained that the best MPC overexpression case resulted in an increased metabolic flux across the mitochondrial membrane, activated a more balanced growth, and reduced the Warburg effect without compromising glucose consumption rate and maximum cell concentration. Overall, this study showed that transport of pyruvate into the mitochondria limits the efficiency of glucose oxidation, which can be overcome by a cell engineering approach.

Tetraploidy, or whole-genome duplication, is a common phenomenon in cancer and preludes chromosome instability, which strongly correlates with disease progression, metastasis, and treatment failure. Therefore, it is reasonable to hypothesize that tetraploidization confers multidrug resistance. Nevertheless, the contribution of whole-genome duplication to chemo-radiotherapy resistance remains unclear. Here, using isogenic diploid and near-tetraploid clones from three colorectal cancer cell lines and one non-transformed human epithelial cell line, we show a consistent growth impairment but a divergent tumorigenic potential of near-tetraploid cells. Next, we assessed the effects of first-line chemotherapeutic drugs, other commonly used agents and ionizing radiation, and found that whole-genome duplication promoted increased chemotherapy resistance and also conferred protection against irradiation. When testing the activation of apoptosis, we observed that tetraploid cells were less prone to caspase 3 activation after treatment with first-line chemotherapeutic agents. Furthermore, we found that pre-treatment with ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3 related (ATR) inhibitors, which targets response to replication stress, significantly enhanced the sensitivity of tetraploid cells to first-line chemotherapeutic agents as well as to ionizing radiation. Our findings provide further insight into how tetraploidy results in greater levels of tolerance to chemo-radiotherapeutic agents and, moreover, we show that ATR inhibitors can sensitize near-tetraploid cells to commonly used chemo-radiotherapy regimens.

Direct injection of cell-laden hydrogels shows high potentials in tissue regeneration for translational therapy. The traditional cell-laden hydrogels are often used as bulk space fillers to tissue defects after injection, likely limiting their structural controllability. On the other hand, patterned cell-laden hydrogel constructs often necessitate invasive surgical procedures. To overcome these problems, herein, we report a unique strategy for encapsulating living human cells in a pore-forming gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-based bioink to ultimately produce injectable hierarchically macro-micro-nanoporous cell-laden GelMA hydrogel constructs through three-dimensional (3D) extrusion bioprinting. The hydrogel constructs can be fabricated into various shapes and sizes that are defect-specific. Due to the hierarchically macro-micro-nanoporous structures, the cell-laden hydrogel constructs can readily recover to their original shapes, and sustain high cell viability, proliferation, spreading, and differentiation after compression and injection. Besides, in vivo studies further reveal that the hydrogel constructs can integrate well with the surrounding host tissues. These findings suggest that our unique 3D-bioprinted pore-forming GelMA hydrogel constructs are promising candidates for applications in minimally invasive tissue regeneration and cell therapy.

RESUMEN La enfermedad diverticular colónica es la presencia de un divertículo no inflamado en el colon. Se considera una enfermedad común, que se caracteriza por la formación de divertículos falsos en la pared colónica en los puntos de debilidad de esta. Su prevalencia aumenta con la edad y una minoría de los pacientes afectados por esta entidad desarrollará un cuadro de diverticulitis aguda. Sus complicaciones abarcan desde un absceso o flegmón, pasa por la formación de fístulas hasta la obstrucción intestinal y peritonitis. Sin embargo, el desarrollo de un hemoperitoneo espontáneo secundario a una enfermedad diverticular aguda es una forma de presentación inusual y, por tanto, poco reportado en la literatura. Se presenta el caso de un paciente con hemoperitoneo secundario a la perforación diverticular colónica.


SUMMARY Colonic diverticular disease is the term to describe the presence of an uninflamed diverticulum of the colon. It is considered a common disease, characterized by the formation of false diverticula in the colonic wall at points of weakness of that, its prevalence increases with age and a minority of patients affected by this disease develops acute diverticulitis. Its complications range from abscess or phlegmon, fistula formation, to intestinal obstruction and peritonitis. However, the development of spontaneous hemoperitoneum secondary to acute diverticular disease is an unusual form of presentation and therefore scarcely reported in the literature. Here is presented a case with a hemoperitoneum secondary to colonic diverticular perforation.

This work determined the potency of hexyl-ciprofloxacin molecules that reversibly interact with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) passivated with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) on Escherichia coli cells. For this, partition of modified antibiotic between different compartments of the gold colloid was determined using analytical techniques. First, concentration of hexyl-ciprofloxacin was determined in the continuous phase of the colloid. Subsequently, the colloid was exposed to a volume of organic immiscible solvent and concentration of the transferred molecules was determined in the organic phase. Comparison of the amount of hexyl-ciprofloxacin in each phase revealed that interaction between molecules and nanoparticles was reversible. Later, this work determined the potency of a population of hexyl-ciprofloxacin molecules contained in a volume of the colloid, and the potency of other population of molecules that only interact with the continuous phase of the colloid. The absolute difference between these two values was proportional to the potency of a number of molecules that interact with the nanoparticles of the colloid.

Although biofilm formation is a very effective mechanism to sustain bacterial life, it is detrimental in medical and industrial sectors. Current strategies to control biofilm proliferation are typically based on biocides, which exhibit a negative environmental impact. In the search for environmentally friendly solutions, nanotechnology opens the possibility to control the interaction between biological systems and colonized surfaces by introducing nanostructured coatings that have the potential to affect bacterial adhesion by modifying surface properties at the same scale. In this work, we present a study on the performance of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride coatings (h-BN) to reduce biofilm formation. In contraposition to planktonic state, we focused on evaluating the efficiency of graphene and h-BN at the irreversible stage of biofilm formation, where most of the biocide solutions have a poor performance. A wild Enterobacter cloacae strain was isolated, from fouling found in a natural environment, and used in these experiments. According to our results, graphene and h-BN coatings modify surface energy and electrostatic interactions with biological systems. This nanoscale modification determines a significant reduction in biofilm formation at its irreversible stage. No bactericidal effects were found, suggesting both coatings offer a biocompatible solution for biofilm and fouling control in a wide range of applications.

Foreseen climate change is expected to impact on grape composition, both sugar and pigment content. We tested the hypothesis that interactions between main factors associated with climate change (elevated CO2, elevated temperature, and water deficit) decouple sugars and anthocyanins, and explored the possible involvement of vegetative area, photosynthesis, and grape C uploading on the decoupling. Tempranillo grapevine fruit-bearing cuttings were exposed to CO2 (700 vs. 400 ppm), temperature (ambient vs. + 4 °C), and irrigation levels (partial vs. full) in temperature-gradient greenhouses. In a search for mechanistic insights into the underlying processes, experiments 1 and 2 were designed to maximize photosynthesis and enlarge leaf area range among treatments, whereas plant growth was manipulated in order to deliberately down-regulate photosynthesis and control vegetative area in experiments 3 and 4. Towards this aim, treatments were applied either from fruit set to maturity with free vegetation and fully irrigated or at 5-8% of pot capacity (experiments 1 and 2), or from veraison to maturity with controlled vegetation and fully irrigated or at 40% of pot capacity (experiments 3 and 4). Modification of air 13C isotopic composition under elevated CO2 enabled the further characterization of whole C fixation period and C partitioning to grapes. Increases of the grape sugars-to-anthocyanins ratio were highly and positively correlated with photosynthesis and grape 13C labeling, but not with vegetative area. Evidence is presented for photosynthesis, from fruit set to veraison, and grape C uploading, from veraison to maturity, as key processes involved in the establishment and development, respectively, of the grape sugars to anthocyanins decoupling.

RESUMEN

The goal of this work is to study transformations that occur upon heating Bi2Se3 to temperatures up to 623 K. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) techniques were used in our investigation. XRD was measured following the 00L and 01L truncation rods. These measurements revealed that upon heating there is a coexistence of a major Bi2Se3 phase and other ones that present structures of quintuple-layers intercalated with Bismuth bilayers. STM measurements of the surface of this material showed the presence of large hexagonal BixSey domains embedded in a Bi2Se3 matrix. STS experiments were employed to map the local electronic density of states and characterize the modifications imposed by the presence of the additional phases. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to support these findings.
